 able to bring rain to Israel than a grasshopper could make the sun rise or set.
Now King Ahab was desperate! He had been out for weeks with his royal steward, Obadiah, searching for green pastures. If they didn’t find grass soon, even the royal herds of horses and mules would die.
One day when Obadiah was out on the trail in search of grass, he met Elijah.
“Go tell King Ahab that I want to talk to him again,” Elijah said.
King Ahab showed up a few hours later very angry with Elijah. “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?” he growled.
“I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah
replied. “It is you and your father’s family who
have abandoned the commandments of the
Lord to worship Baal. Now, call everyone in
Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring
all the prophets of Baal, 450 of them, as well as Queen Jezebel’s prophets who worship Asherah.”
So Ahab and all of Israel gathered on Mount Carmel
as Elijah had commanded. “How long will you waver between two opinions?” Elijah asked the people crowding the mountaintop. “If the Lord is God, follow Him, but if Baal is god, then follow him. Let’s put it to a test,” he added, staring
